Here in the UK, we are no strangers to a rainy day, but it can certainly scupper plans. When you’ve got to make last-minute plans to entertain a young child somewhere both dry and warm, it can be more tempting just to avoid heading out altogether. But day trips, especially for the whole family, are a great time to bond, make new memories, and have new experiences. So if your fun outdoor family plans have been ruined by a nothing shower, here are a few ideas for heading indoors, which are fun for all the family.
Hit up your local museum
Many cities in the UK have great museums which are certainly worth exploring, such as Sheffield’s Western Park Museum and Kelham Island Industrial Museum, which are the perfect compromise for both adults and kids. They’re indoors, they’re engaging, and throughout school breaks, they usually have extra exhibitions or shows, specifically for the younger crowd. Most cities will have at least one museum which is fantastic for kids, and if you’re willing to venture a little bit further afield, check out Eureka! in Halifax, or the Royal Armories in Leeds for a great day out.
Visit an indoor wildlife centre
When you think of wildlife centres, farms, zoos, and safari parks probably come to mind – not great for a rainy day, I’m sure you’ll agree. But there are some wildlife centres which have a significant section indoors – a Tropical Butterfly House comes to mind. Many cities have one, and they’re always a hit with the kids. It’s not just butterflies, many have birds, including falconry displays, and even dark areas where you can find nocturnal animals. The kids love all the different creatures, and the bonus is that these places are kept at tropical temperatures, so even when the weather is miserable, you can pretend you’re on holiday somewhere lovely.
Head to a trampoline park
If you were planning on heading outside to encourage your little ones to burn off some energy, it can be particularly disappointing when you’re confined to indoors on a rainy day. Well, worry not – the recent boom in popularity of trampoline parks is a surefire way to get your little ones to let off some steam, and it’s fantastic exercise too.
Trampolining is one of those fun family activities that people of any age can get involved with, and you’re guaranteed to sleep well that night. With a park in every city, you won’t have far to travel to get your trampolining fix.
Take a trip to the theatre
Most people head to the cinema on a rainy day to catch up on the latest animated blockbuster, but next time, be sure to check out the theatre listings. Last minute tickets for matinees, especially for family friendly shows, can come at a seriously reduced rate, so you could end up seeing something incredible for a steal.
When the weather is miserable, don’t give into the fate of staying inside all day – head out to your local museum trampoline park, or even the theatre for some dry family fun time.
